Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat Synopsis
“Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat” takes place in two locations: Dalhousie and London.
In Dalhousie, we follow a Muslim boy named Yakub (Karan Mehta) and a Hindu girl named Amrita (Alaya F). Amrita studies in school and meets Yakub after her classes. The two of them run an account on the bootleg version of TikTok, which is called Ting Tong (because TikTok is banned in India), with Amrita playing a burqa-clad character called “Saloni Ammi.” Amrita’s family doesn’t want Yakub near her and her brothers always chase Yakub when they find that he has been trying to get in touch with her. Amrita and Yakub want to attend the titular DJ Mohabbat’s (Vicky Kaushal) concert. DJ Mohabbat has announced a secret concert at a location near Manali and the duo want to attend it.
Amrita’s brothers prohibit her from meeting Yakub, as they believe that this is a case of love jihad. While Amrita says that she has challenged Yakub to get her to the concert despite the prohibition by her family. The family locks Amrita up till the concert, which is on Holi day. Amrita’s family gets the police to pick up Yakub and give him and his father a beating to get them to refrain from pursuing Amrita.
Since Amrita’s family won’t allow her out of the house, Yakub breaks into her house to meet her. The duo makes a run for it, which predictably creates a fiasco in town. Amrita’s family file a kidnapping case on Yakub. Yakub has stolen the bike and wallet of Amrita’s brother but loses the wallet when they stop for some food. Yakub sells the motorcycle for cash. They find abandoned villas left behind by Punjabis, who has summer villas in Chamba. They have 5 days to kill before the concert.
The police and the family track Yakub’s movements (with the wallet and the bike) and ascertain that he is headed in Chamba’s direction. Amrita’s brother asks the police to track Yakub via his mobile phone. As the issue becomes a media sensation, Amrita and Yakub also find out that they are being pursued by the police.
Amrita wakes up the next morning to realize that the owners of the villa have returned. The wife (Navnindra Behl) is suspicious of them both, but the uncle is very easy going. Amrita wants to leave, but Yakub trusts the uncle and auntie. They have a son in Germany and a grandson.
Soon, a local in Chamba recognizes Amrita and reports her location to the police. When auntie realizes that Yakub and Amrita are wanted by the police, she gets really worried and warns Amrita that she should stay away from Yakub as his religion allows him 4 marriages. Yakub takes Amrita and runs from the villa. Amrita wants to go back gone as she is tired of running. Yakub calls her naive when Amrita claims that her dad will listen to her. Amrita calls her father, who collects her. Yakub tries to take a bus to Chandigarh, but the bus is intercepted by the police. Yakub tries to escape, but is shot down in cold blood by Amrtia’s brother.
In London, the daughter of a Pakistani magnate, Aisha (also played by Alaya F), becomes obsessed with the Indian DJ, Harmeet (also played by Karan Mehta). It is clear that Aisha is besotted with Harmeet and meets him after his shows and wants to invite him to her after parties, but Harmeet wants to maintain his distance. Sapna (Sapna Pabbi) is the lead singer in Harmeet’s band and is Aisha’s best friend. Sapna tries to counsel Aisha to leave Harmeet alone. Aisha is persistent and tells Harmeet that she is 18 years old and can do whatever she wants.
Harmeet meets DJ Mohabbat in London and wants Mohabbat to listen to his music. DJ Mohabbat is stunned to see that Harmeet looks exactly like Yakub, whose Ting Tong videos are famous in India. DJ Mohabbat tells Harmeet that his songs are good but are missing a personality. Aisha essentially stalks him until he is left with no option but to let her into his house. Aisha vomited in the club one night and Sapna abandoned her. Harmeet has no option but to take her home as there was nobody else willing to take responsibility for her.
The owner of the club cares for Harmeet and advises him to focus on his music. He says that Aisha is a distraction and that he should stay away from her. The next day, Aisha refuses to leave Harmeet’s house and he pushes her out. But Aisha waits in the rain, forcing Harmeet to talk to her. Aisha says that she loves Harmeet. Harmeet finally starts to accept Aisha. Aisha reveals how her parents cheat on each other. Harmeet says that his father stays in Germany and is gay. At this point it is revealed that Harmeet’s father is the son the uncle and auntie who own the villa where Yakub and Amrita are hiding. The grandparents are dying to meet Harmeet.
When Aisha’s father learns about this affair, he sends Harmeet to jail for violating a minor and ruins his dreams of performing in India. Harmeet is locked up in prison, where he is raped by fellow inmates. As time passes, Harmeet takes control of his life inside the prison and forms his own gang. Harmeet is finally released after 3 years when Aisha makes a media statement that Harmeet is innocent.
Aisha tries to connect with Harmeet, but he rudely pushes her out of his life. He says that nothing Aisha can do will bring his life back. Aisha is distraught and tries to commit suicide by crashing her car. Harmeet travels to India to visit the DJ Mohabbat concert. Amrita is at the same concert.
