kill Boksoon Plot

The opening scene of this movie sets the stage for how unhinged a lot of the content in this movie becomes. A Japanese gangster wakes up on the middle of the road, as he has literally been set up onto a pillow while unconscious. Enter: Boksoon. There’s a big pun on her name, which is Gil Boksoon, which, when pronounced in Korean, sounds like Kill Boksoon. She’s dressed in a cosplay nurse costume and tells him to get ready, giving him a sword to fight with. At the same time, she complains about her home life as they spar, and when he overpowers her axe, she says time out. He agrees, and when she turns around from her weapon stash, she shoots him dead.

It becomes one of the biggest news stories that night, and as we learn early on, the company she works for calls these shows. The more elaborate and entertaining they are, the better. Boksoon likes to go drinking with her buddies, including one guy she has sex with that can never reach the rank she has. He makes a cynical speech about how the company plays favorites and monopolized the industry, and Boksoon makes a snarky comment about how he’s just not good enough to get A rank.

We meet the owners of the company, the guy who taught Boksoon how to fight and his moderately deranged sister. The sister introduces Boksoon to the top trainee of the newest batch who idolizes Boksoon. They fight, the trainee loses, and everyone says the trainee reminds them of a young Boksoon. While all of this is happenining, Boksoon struggles at home with her daughter. She sees her kid is smoking and tries to reprimand her, but the girl just laughs it off.

We learn that her daughter is a closeted lesbian and dating another one of her female classmates, but when a male classmate with a crush on her gets photo evidence the two are dating, Boksoon’s daughter literally stabs him in the neck with a pair of scissors. Expelled from the school, Boksoon now has to realize her daughter is just like her, a little psychotic, and could go down the same path if they’re not being careful.

When Boksoon deliberately fails an assignment, the company owner’s sister goes after her. She upgrades Boksoon’s sex buddy up to a level A, and puts him and all of their drinking buddies up to a mission to kill Boksoon. Together with the trainee who idolized her, Boksoon kills everyone, with her last buddy who she had an intimate relationship with instructing her to take care of his father when he’s gone. This leads Boksoon into one final rampage where she goes up against the company, the people who raised her to be the way she is today, and the owner and his sister.

We also get an origin story scene back to why Boksoon is the way she is. A younger version of her boss, portrayed by Lee Jae-wook (I started screaming when I saw him appear on the screen, that was not the cameo I was expecting at all), breaks into her home while she’s at school as a high schooler, he sets up the scene to make it seem like her father committed suicide. In actuality, he’s about to murder him. When Boksoon unexpectedly returns home in the middle of the staging process, he tells her she now needs to die because of what she’s witnessing. However, she throws him completely off guard when she pushes the chair from underneath her father out, leaving him to suffocate to death via hanging.

What an unhinged movie this was, and the black humor was straight up my alley. There are definitely some sections of the movie where one could claim it’s pretty disjointed, especially when it comes to the big betrayal of all of her friends. We get hints that they’re going to do what they do when it becomes more clear early on they’re struggling financially except her, especially when we see the one guy who can’t get A lives inside of a trailer. There’s some interesting technical decisions made throughout as well, especially when we see the multiple pathways a fight could go, especially when Boksoon’s life is at risk. That’s a reminder she’s never truly safe in this line of work, and her daughter would be truly left alone. I did wish we saw more of the daughter as well. It’s pretty sad her mother had to walk away literally right after her daughter came out as a lesbian in front of her, and that storyline could’ve been wrapped up more.
